Learning Resources for Primary Practitioners

DEED has an extensive range of hands-on resources which can be borrowed. They range from country-based collections to themed collections such as homes, food, water and musical instruments from around the world. They are designed to help you to bring the world to your place, and give young people the chance to broaden their views of the world, challenge negative stereotypes and explore similarities and differences.

Our resource collections, books, teaching packs and story books support curriculum planning, as well as arts weeks, Children’s Rights, and the Sustainable Development Goals.

WIth many schools now teaching a creative curriculum, DEED’s artefact collections are able to provide the resources, photo packs and books needed to teach particular themes, whilst fostering a global perspective and promoting positive attitudes towards difference and diversity.

Recycled Collection

This collection is a firm favourite with an important underlying message. This collection is very versatile and can be used to support many areas of the curriculum including Citizenship and Design Technology as well as important issues such as Sustainability and The Environment. There are many diverse objects made from recycled materials, including a notebook made from elephant dung, tyre shoes, a necklace made from flip-flops and photographs of recycling in Ghana, Thailand and India. There are lots of interesting teaching materials, activities and ideas for things to make with recycled materials.

“I am surprised to see so many useful things made by skilled people from stuff that we would just throw away. It has made me thing about how wasteful we can be”

— Teacher at GTA course training

Recycled Toys Collection

This collection is an excellent resource that can be used to support design technology and science with a focus on vehicles and moving toys. This collection provides a hands-on opportunity for children to explore toys from around the world, many of which have moving parts, to stimulate their own imaginations. The toys are fun and diverse and also lend themselves to discussions about recycling as they are all made from reclaimed materials.

“Looking at your recycled toys has really helped my pupils think about how people around the world may play, and how skilled they are in making moving toys from what we would consider to be waste.”

— Primary Teacher as part of an arts week focussed on ‘Children’s Rights’.
