He is trying to organise a study visit to South India in Easter 2012. Attached are details about the trip and his contact details. This is a very exciting and worthwhile opportunity for schools.

October 2010 - WIMBORNE CO-OPERATIVE HAS FAIRTRADE IN THE BAG

A pupil from Wimborne First School has combined her creative talents with environmental conscience to be named winner of a bag design competition run by DEED (Development Education in Dorset) with The Co-operative. Eight-year-old Orla Mount was inspired by the theme of Climate Change when challenged to create a new ‘bag for life’ for The Co-operative Food store in Wimborne. Her design includes the slogan “Recycle to keep our planet happy”, and the wording is surrounded by her impression of a ‘happy world’ with pictures of the Earth, the sun, a cloud, a tree and a flower all with smiley faces.

Five schools from Wimborne took part in the competition and there were almost 100 entries covering the themes of climate change and Fairtrade. Judges were impressed by Orla’s positivity and the clear message portrayed in the colourful design. The winning design will now be made into a new ‘bag for life’ by Vandanamu, a women’s sewing unit in India, working to rebuild lives after the Tsunami. It will be for sale at the new-look Co-operative Food store in Wimborne and all proceeds will go to Julia’s House.

Fay Bowden, Membership Officer for The Co-operative, said: “This competition has been a great way of engaging children in Wimborne with the really important issues of climate change and Fairtrade, both of which are of vital importance to The Co-operative. “I’m sure Orla’s bag will be a hit with our customers and I’m confident it will help raise awareness of the importance of taking action against climate change now for the sake of future generations.”

Sarah Wise from DEED said: “We have been really impressed with The Co-operative’s commitment to this project and the feedback we’ve had from schools indicates it has had a really positive impact on the children involved. “We aim to inspire children to have a global outlook during their education and this project exemplifies the work we do in Dorset communities.”
